The Role

We're looking for a commercially curious paralegal to support our growing legal function and own day-to-day compliance operations. You'll work directly with the Senior Legal Counsel on commercial, corporate, and operational matters, with a dotted line to the CFO for compliance - giving you exposure across the executive team and the wider business.

This is a hybrid role spanning paralegal work and operational compliance, drafting and managing contracts on the legal side, and owning policies, registers, and third-party diligence on the compliance side. In the first six months, expect compliance to dominate as we work towards initial ISO certification alongside the COO. Contract and corporate work will scale up as the legal function builds out.

You’ll work directly with the Senior Legal Counsel, with close working relationships across the COO and CFO on compliance, ESG reporting and audit readiness.

Ideal for someone who wants to learn fast, work on real commercial deals, and grow with the company, with a clear path to specialise in legal or compliance, or progress towards SQE qualification.

You won’t be expected to be the legal or compliance expert from day one. You will be expected to bring structure, follow-through and strong judgement, with support from senior colleagues.

What You’ll Be Doing
Compliance (60%)

ISO Certification & Ongoing Compliance

  • Draft, maintain, and improve the IMS/ISMS document set (policies, procedures, standards, work instructions, templates) with robust version control, approvals, and distribution.

  • Maintain records required for auditability (e.g., training records, supplier assurance records, incident logs, risk assessments, change records).

  • Manage and track workflow for event driven activities

  • Internal and external audit support

  • Corrective actions (CAPA) and continual improvement

  • ISO 27001, 9001, 45001 mobilisation

  • Platform management

Supplier & Customer Compliance

  • Run onboarding compliance checks on suppliers and customers in line with Octopus's policies; flag risks and escalate appropriately

  • Maintain due diligence records so onboarding documentation is always audit-ready

ESG Reporting

  • Pull data from our ESG software to update the monthly compliance report; flag non-compliance and data gaps for action

  • Support investor-facing ESG reporting and ad hoc requests from Octopus and other stakeholders

Training & People Support

  • Supporting the COO in coordinating staff compliance training and onboarding refreshers, reinforcing compliance habits across the team through clear instructions, reminders, and follow-ups

Legal (40%)

Contract Administration

  • Maintain the contract register and own version control across all commercial agreements, leases, and supplier contracts

  • Manage execution workflows (DocuSign), file fully executed copies, and ensure delegated authority is followed on signing

  • Track key contract dates — renewals, terminations, rent reviews, price escalators — and flag to owners ahead of deadlines

  • Pull contract terms, titles, and clauses from the register on request to support the wider team

Real Estate & Knowledge Management

  • Maintain the lease register across sites

  • Build and maintain the legal team's internal knowledge base — templates, playbooks, and reference materials — so legal know-how scales with the company

Drafting Support

  • Scope to take on first-draft work on NDAs and standard commercial agreements from approved templates, under the supervision of the Senior Legal Counsel

  • Support negotiations through redline tracking, issues lists, and counterparty correspondence

What We’re Looking For

Essentials

  • Strong drafting and document management skills -high attention to detail is non-negotiable

  • Working knowledge of UK data protection law (UK GDPR / DPA 2018) and core compliance concepts (KYC, AML, conflicts)

  • Highly organised self-starter, comfortable building processes from scratch

  • Clear communicator, able to translate legal and compliance issues into plain business language

Nice to Have

  • 1–3 years' compliance or paralegal experience

  • Experience in infrastructure, energy, real estate, technology, or startup environments

  • Familiarity with contract lifecycle or compliance tools
